Retired Teacher
When Rose Mary Huber became a teacher, she committed herself to the role of a lifelong learner and educator. More than just a profession to Huber, education has been the guiding force in her life. She is fulfilled by the opportunity to learn and to teach: two of the most empowering experiences we are able to share with other people. As a volunteer and environmentalist, Huber continues to make education a focal point in her life. The Oxnard, California based volunteer is eager to work with environmental nonprofit organizations and bird conservation efforts. She is happy to transfer her career in education to the nonprofit sector.
Nature Lover & Outdoor Enthusiast
In her retirement, Rose Mary Huber is making the most out of her free time. When she isn’t volunteering with local environmental nonprofits or birding initiatives, Huber enjoys gardening. An interest she has embraced all of her life, she has always enjoyed taking care of a garden. Growing up, she would pick walnuts with her parents, Ramona and Jose Munoz. She would also tend to the family’s walnut trees (juglans) year-round. Nurturing the walnut trees was a fulfilling and enduring process for young Rose Mary. From keeping the base dry to avoid crown rot to seasonal pruning duties, she watched as her care for the trees helped the plants flourish, blossom and fruit — slowly but surely. The process instilled within her a lifelong perspective on how even small, regular actions can make a lasting and enduring impact for the long term.
America Learns & Literacy Volunteering
Rose Mary Huber is an active education volunteer with America Learns, where she supports adult and youth literacy initiatives on a monthly basis. Through programs connected with organizations such as the VC Library Foundation, America Learns helps make it possible to offer adult reading support and literacy tutoring for troubled youth. Rose Mary has been volunteering in literacy education for over a year and finds the work deeply meaningful, particularly when helping learners build confidence, independence and long-term educational skills.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Rose Mary Huber’s volunteer work has been supporting adult learners from diverse backgrounds, including a former student from Iran who was working toward obtaining American citizenship. She works with both adults and youth each month, offering patient, individualized support rooted in her background as a retired educator. Her ongoing commitment to literacy reflects a lifelong dedication to education, community service and expanding access to learning opportunities.
